Dermal fillers: what a consultation should cover before lip or facial treatment

Dermal fillers are non-surgical procedures, but not risk-free. Product, anatomy, technique and access to urgent advice all matter.

The short answer

What matters most

  • Planning should be based on anatomy, proportion, health history and a realistic goal.
  • Ask about the exact product, its source, practitioner training and the complication pathway.
  • Serious complications are uncommon but possible, so aftercare and urgent access matter.
01

Assessment before product

The proposed facial area is only one part of planning. A consultation should consider tissue, movement, blood-vessel anatomy, previous filler and the relationship between features.

02

What should be checked

  • Relevant conditions, allergies and medicines.
  • Previous filler and reactions.
  • Current dental problems, skin inflammation or infection.
  • Facial movement, symmetry and tissue quality.
  • Whether treatment should proceed, wait or not be recommended.
03

Questions about safety

  • What product will be used and how is the batch recorded?
  • What training and experience does the practitioner have?
  • How are vascular complications recognised?
  • What emergency plan and contact route are available?
  • What follow-up is included?
04

Risks and recovery

Temporary swelling, tenderness and bruising can occur. More serious complications are possible, including vascular injury. Severe or increasing pain, significant skin-colour change or any visual symptom after filler needs urgent clinical assessment.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Are fillers permanent?

Many commonly used fillers are temporary, but duration varies by product, area and person.

Can I have filler at my first appointment?

Only if assessment, suitability, valid consent and the clinic process all support it. It is always reasonable to take time to decide.

Why does previous filler matter?

Previous product may remain and can affect anatomy, tissue behaviour and planning.
