About a scabies consultation

Scabies can usually be managed in the community, but effective care depends on the right diagnosis, treating close contacts together and following application and cleaning instructions carefully.

Care pathway: Usually managed through community pharmacy or primary care with a scabicide such as permethrin when suitable. Seek GP or specialist advice if treatment fails, infection develops or the diagnosis is uncertain.

What happens at your appointment?

1. History

   We map when the concern began, how it has changed, associated symptoms, triggers and treatments already tried.

2. Skin assessment

   The presentation, distribution and relevant health factors are reviewed, including whether the diagnosis remains uncertain.

3. Right pathway

   You leave with a clear primary-care plan, safety-net advice or onward referral when specialist assessment is more appropriate.

• The itch pattern, timing, affected areas, close contacts and whether others have symptoms.
• Any treatment used, how it was applied and whether relevant contacts were treated together.
• Features suggesting another diagnosis, secondary infection, crusted scabies or a need for medical advice.

How much does a scabies consultation cost?

The consultation fee is confirmed when you arrange your appointment, before you commit. If the pharmacist recommends treatment or onward care, any costs are explained before you decide.

Good to know before you book

• Scabies is spread through close skin contact and is not caused by poor hygiene.
• Itching can continue for several weeks even after successful treatment.
• Incorrect application or untreated close contacts are common reasons symptoms appear to persist.

• Follow the written skin-care or medicine guidance agreed during the consultation.
• Know which changes mean you should seek earlier clinical review.
• Persistent, worsening or uncertain symptoms are escalated to the appropriate service.
